Navigators typically refer to stars using one of two naming systems for stars: common names and Bayer's designations. The second typical use of the navigational stars is to determine gyrocompass error by computing the azimuth of a star and comparing it to an azimuth measured using the ship's gyrocompass. Multiple lines of position can be intersected to obtain a position known as a celestial fix. The first is to obtain a line of position by use of a sextant observation and the techniques of celestial navigation. These stars are typically used in two ways by the navigator. This list provides information on the name, approximate position in the celestial sphere, and apparent magnitude of the 58 selected stars in tabular form and by star charts. Information for another 115 stars, known as "tabulated stars", is also available to the navigator. Criteria in the choice of stars includes their distribution across the celestial sphere, brightness, and ease of identification. The selection of the stars is made by His Majesty's Nautical Almanac Office and the US Naval Observatory, in the production of the yearly Nautical Almanac which the two organizations have published jointly since 1958. Of these, 58 stars are known in the field of navigational astronomy as "selected stars", including 19 stars of the first magnitude, 38 stars of the second magnitude, and Polaris. Under optimal conditions, approximately 6,000 stars are visible to the naked eye of an observer on Earth. Selected navigation stars (except Polaris) listed on a U.S. In practical use for sight reductions whilst at sea, tables can further assist a navigator by giving approximate altitudes (angles above the horizon) and azimuths (degrees as read from the compass) from an assumed or estimated position, usually helping to quickly determine the location and then quickly identify a particular navigational star that may be useful for a sight reduction. In addition to tables, star charts provide an aid to the navigator in identifying the navigational stars, showing constellations, relative positions, and brightness. A second group of 115 "tabulated stars" can also be used for celestial navigation, but are often less familiar to the navigator and require extra calculations.Īlthough Polaris can quickly and simply give a solution for latitude in the northern hemisphere, it can not participate in giving a position fix including longitude - it is for this reason it is excluded from the list of 57 primary navigational stars, each of which can be used to produce (in conjunction with each other, known time in relation to the prime meridian and a set of sight reduction tables) an actual latitudinal and longitudinal positional fix.įor purposes of identification, the positions of navigational stars - expressed as declination and sidereal hour angle - are often rounded to the nearest degree. The other 57 selected stars have daily positions given in nautical almanacs, aiding the navigator in efficiently performing observations on them. When navigating in the Northern Hemisphere, a simple and quick technique can be used with Polaris to determine the observers latitude or, for larger maritime vessels can be used to calculate any gyrocompass error that may exist. The star Polaris, often called either the "Pole Star" or the "North Star", is treated specially due to its proximity to the north celestial pole. Many of the selected stars were named in antiquity by the Babylonians, Greeks, Romans, and Arabs. Of the approximately 6,000 stars visible to the naked eye under optimal conditions, these selected stars are among the brightest and span 38 constellations of the celestial sphere from the declination of −70° to +89°. The selected stars for navigation are often used for sextant observations.įifty-seven navigational stars and additionally the star Polaris are given a special status in the field of celestial navigation.

Thus although the spatial requirements of B-DNA potentially allow four complementary base pairs to be formed (i.e., G-T, G-C, A-T, and A-C), only the G-C and A-T base pairs are normally found in DNA. The hydrogen bonding between complementary base pairs is such that the most energetically stable DNA configuration is achieved when adenine pairs with thymine and guanine pairs with cytosine. The B-DNA helix makes one full revolution approximately every 10.1 to 10.6 nucleotides (Wolfe 1993). The average distance between adjacent nucleotides in the same strand of DNA (the vertical rise) is between 0.321 to 0.337 nm (Wolfe 1993). Other DNA conformations have diameters that range from about 1.8 to 2.3 nm (Wolfe 1993). The average diameter of B-DNA is about 2.0 nm. B-DNA is the most common form of DNA found in living organisms. At least six different DNA conformations (designated A, B, C, D, E, and Z) have been identified, but only the A, Z, and B conformations are found in nature (Wolfe 1993). Other DNA conformations use the same nucleotides and molecular bonds, but the three-dimensional structure of the helix is different. Idealized schematic of the DNA double helix (courtesy Dr. The helical structure described by Watson and Crick, called B-DNA, is only one of several possible conformations.įigure 1. Then, the sugar-phosphate linkages in one strand would proceed from the 5´ to 3´ carbon, and the sugar-phosphate linkages in the other strand would proceed in 3´ to 5´ direction. Suppose the double helical structure of DNA could be unwound and both strands of DNA laid side-by-side (refer to Figure 1). The alternating sugar-phosphate groups in each DNA strand form the so-called backbone of DNA, and they also confer a directionality. The structure of the DNA helix is stabilized by van der Waals forces, hydrogen bonds between complementary organic bases (a base pair), and hydrophobic interactions between the nitrogenous bases and the surrounding sheath of water. A DNA molecule is composed of two unbranched polynucleotide chains (strands) that wind about each other into a structure called a double helix, as illustrated in Figure 1. The diameter of the DNA helix is 2 nm and the vertical rise per base pair is 0.34 nm (Van Holde 1989). In DNA, the term nucleotide refers to the complete assemblage of a nitrogenous base (A, G, C, or T), a five-carbon deoxyribose sugar, and a phosphate group. Phosphate groups are attached to the third (3´) and fifth (5´) carbon atoms. Adenine and guanine are purines, and cytosine and thymine are pyrimidines. The first carbon atom, the 1´ carbon, is by definition the carbon atom covalently attached to one of four organic bases: guanine (G), adenine (A), thymine (T), or cytosine (C). The carbon atoms of the deoxyribose sugar are designated by numbering them sequentially from one to five.
In larger puzzles, the player can also guide the formation of chemicals through multiple reactors, which they place out on a larger rectangular grid representing the planet's surface. The player successfully completes each puzzle by constructing a program capable of repeatedly generating the required output, meeting a certain quota. Similarly, if a waldo delivers the wrong product, the player will need to check their program. While the two waldos can cross over each other without harm, collision of atoms with one another or with the walls of the reactor is not allowed such collisions stop the program and force the player to re-evaluate their solution. The product molecule does not need to match orientation or specific layout of the molecules as long as the molecule is topologically equivalent with respect to atoms, bonds, and bond types however, in larger puzzles, these factors will influence the inputs to downstream reactors. As such, the player is challenged to create a visual program to accept the given inputs, disassemble and reassemble them as necessary, and deliver them to the target output areas to match the required product. The reactors may support specific nodes, set by the player, that act where atomic bonds can be made or broken, where atoms can undergo fission or fusion, or where logic decisions based on atom type can be made. The two waldos can also be synchronized, forcing one to wait for the other to reach a synchronization command. The commands direct the movement of the waldo, to pick up, rotate, and drop atoms and molecules, and to trigger reactor events such as chemical bond formation. The player adds commands from an array to direct each waldo independently through the grid. Each reactor has up to two input and up to two output quadrants, and supports two waldos, red and blue, manipulated through command icons placed on the grid. The primary game mode of SpaceChem depicts the internal workings of a Reactor, mapped out to a 10 × 8 regular grid. In SpaceChem, the player takes the role of a SpaceChem Reactor Engineer whose task is to create circuits through which atoms and molecules flow with the aid of waldos to produce particular batches of chemical shipments for each level. SpaceChem was incorporated into some academic institutions for teaching concepts related to both chemistry and programming.Ī SpaceChem program requiring the player to make titanium oxide and zinc oxide using titanium, zinc, and oxygen, and deliver the completed molecules to the appropriate quadrant on the right Reviewers found the game's open-ended problem-solving nature as a highlight of the title. The game has since been ported to other computing platforms and mobile devices. Though it was initially rejected for sale on the Steam platform, Valve later offered to sell the game after it received high praise from game journalists further attention came from the game's release alongside one of the Humble Indie Bundles. The game was initially released for Microsoft Windows at the start of 2011 via Zachtronics' own website. SpaceChem was the developer's first foray into a commercial title after a number of free Flash-based browser games that feature similar puzzle-based assembly problems. In the game, the player is tasked to produce one or more specific chemical molecules via an assembly line by programming two remote manipulators (called "waldos" in the game) that interact with atoms and molecules through a visual programming language. SpaceChem is an indie puzzle game developed by Zachtronics Industries, based on principles of automation and chemical bonding.
